National Food Security Act (NFSA)

National Food Security Act (NFSA) is the scheme by Govt. of India to provide food to the people who are financially weak. The mission was signed in the year 2013 which covers all the previous running food related schemes like Midday meal, Integrated Child Development Service, Public Distribution System. The mission aims at providing food grains to near about 67% of 1.2 billion India’s population which is further more distributed as 75% of two third in rural area and remaining in urban area. It’s the responsibility of state government of carrying out researches and make their state eligible for the mission which will actually run the Public Distribution System for supplying food grains at very cheap rate.

Benefits of National Food Security Act:

  • Food grains at very low price: Under the scheme person is allowed to take 5 kg of food grains/month at Rs. 3/kg of rice, Rs. 2/kg of wheat, Rs. 1/kg of coarse grain.
  • Special Services for pregnant women: Pregnant women/lactating mother are eligible to “take home ration” of 600 calories service or maternity benefits of Rs. 6000 every month
  • Free Hot meals to children: Children of age 4 months to 14 years are allowed to have a free hot meal and also eligible for take home ration service.
  • Food security allowance: In case if beneficiaries do not get free food grain he/she is given food security allowance by the government so that food grain comes at his/her home.
  • The benefit of other scheme under NFSM: If the person is poorest and is enrolled for antodaya scheme he/she is liable of getting 35 kg of food grain.

Eligibility for National Food Security Act:

  1. Any person who is below poverty line and hold BPL card.
  2. Pregnant Women/Lactating Women.
  3. Children of the age 4 months to 14 years.
  4. Moreover there are many eligibility factors about which the government should take care and make their state eligible for the mission.

Document required for National Food Security Act:

  1. BPL card.
  2. Birth Certificate of Child (In case to prove pregnancy)
  3. Survey report by state government.
  4. Ration Card.
  5. More documents (if required) can be informed to locals by local govt. body.
