Scholarship to the Scheduled Caste Students for Aboard Studies

Carrying forward visionary BR Ambedkar’s dream of providing quality education to Dalit students, the state has taken up initiatives to ensure that the aspiration of these students don’t remain a dream, but turn into a reality. The State’s Department of Social Welfare has projected numbers that indicate certainly a sign of progression 303 Dalit students sent from various parts of Maharashtra to the US, UK and Australia and aboard to pursue higher studies. It is a feather on the state’s cap as Maharashtra, so far, has been leading in this exercise, Department of Social Welfare officials point out. The scholarship scheme is an initiative of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment and each state’s social welfare department conducts the exercise of listing meritorious candidates every year. The overseas scholarship scheme for Scheduled Caste (SC) students (Dalits) was set up in the state in 2003 and 50 students have been sponsored for studies abroad every year. An approximate budget of Rs 30 crore is allocated for the purpose. This year too, 14 students have been shortlisted from the state to study abroad.

Required eligibility and conditions for applying Scholarship to the Scheduled Caste Students for Aboard Studies:

  1. Scholarships are open to all Maharashtra citizens who are resident in India at the time of application
  2. Candidates are normally expected to hold a good first class degree from a recognized university in India
  3. For this scholarship parents income limit is Rs. 6.00 lakhs per year
  4. Students have make contract with the Government that after successful completion of foreign education he will pay minimum 10 per cent of the total expenditure to the Social Justice Fund, but it optional
  5. It is must to have prior admission to the institution and course chosen
  6. Candidates who are already studying or have started their program abroad are not eligible

Document required for applying Scholarship to the Scheduled Caste Students for Aboard Studies:

  1. Candidate must submit document which shows evidence of admission to a university or a course, and a full detail of the institute’s financial requirements
  2. Evidence of any outstanding achievements in extra-curricular activities in any field
  3. Photocopy of the first and last pages of your passport
  4. Caste Certificate
  5. Income Certificate (up to 6 lakh)
  6. Identity proof
  7. Passport size photograph
  8. Permanent residence proof

Application Procedure:

  1. Manual form should be filled by student then submitted it to Social Welfare Commissionerate office
