Student Entrepreneurship Programme 2.0 (SEP 2.0) to promote innovation and entrepreneurship

Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) is NITI Aayog’s flagship initiative for promoting innovation and entrepreneurship in India. The main objective of the mission is provision of a platform for generating new innovative ideas and a platform for encouraging and supporting successful entrepreneurs at Incubation centres. Major initiatives under AIM, are Atal Tinkering Labs, Atal Incubation Centres, Atal New India Challenge, Mentor of Change Program, Atal Community Innovation Centre and ARISE.

On August 11, 2020, AIM in collaboration with American multinational company Dell Technologies launched Student Entrepreneurship Programme 2.0 (SEP 2.0) for young and budding innovators of Atal Tinkering Labs. Under this phase 2 of the programme, the young innovators will get an opportunity to work closely with the Dell volunteers and get their mentor support and feedback.

ATLs and Student Entrepreneurship Programme (SEP):

  • Atal Tinkering Labs (ATLs) are an important initiative under AIM. It refers to a work space where young can give shape to their ideas through do-it yourself mode and learn through innovation. Various activities ranging from regional, national level competitions, exhibitions, workshops, lecture series etc are conducted.
  • Student Entrepreneurship Programme is a 10 months long programme for promoting innovators for fostering their innovative side and helping them transform their products into fully functioning protocols. SEP 1.0 began in January 2019. It was a 10 months rigorous programme. ATL marathon is a nationwide contest where students identify community challenges and create grassroots innovations and design solutions. Top 6 teams of ATL Marathon got a chance to actually convert their ideas into fulfilling products in the market.

SEP 2.0:

  • SEP 2.0 was launched by AIM in collaboration of with Dell Technologies.
  • The top 8 teams selected from the Atal Innovation Marathon will be enrolled for SEP 2.0
  • Under SEP 2.0 students will be allowed to work closely with the Dell volunteers
  • This will enable the students to get mentor support from the volunteers right from pitching the idea to executing it and launching the same in the market.
  • Even prototyping and testing support, end user feedback will be provided by the volunteers.
  • Intellectual property registration, manufacturing support and final launch of the product in the market will also be mentored by the volunteers
  • Students will also get an idea of patenting of ideas and processes and products
  • Thus, the students will get end to end support and guidance from the Dell volunteers.
  • SEP 2.0 will bring exciting changes in the entrepreneurial innovation platform in addition to the SEP 1.0

Objectives and Benefits:

  • The main objective of the programme is to create and encourage the innovation for pitching ideas, designing impactful solutions and transforming it into final products
  • It aims at encouraging creativity from the grassroots levels
  • It helps and nurture the researchers and innovators to find solutions of core importance
  • It also provides for collaboration with the public and private institutions to ensure participation, create a platform for innovators
  • It tends to build an innovation ecosystem in the country in the long run.

  • Thus, aim of the programme is to transform innovative prototypes into fully functional products, i.e. to convert ideas worked on into fully functional products in the market. Thereby promoting and developing innovation and entrepreneurship.
