Indian Railways Passenger Travel Insurance Scheme

The optional travel insurance scheme, introduced by Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) from September 1 this year. The passenger will be given the option of insurance cover at the time of booking the ticket on the IRCTC website. If the passenger decides to opt for it, then the premium amount will be added to the ticket cost. The insurance company will send an SMS or e-mail to confirm the policy number along with a link to update nomination details. The scheme is being implemented on a pilot basis by IRCTC in partnership with ICICI Lombard General Insurance, Royal Sundaram General Insurance and Shriram General Insurance selected through a bidding process. According to Railways, the insurance company is required to process the claim and send the cheque within 15 days of the receipt of the document. The claims for compensation should be lodged within four months of the event/accident.

Benefits of the Indian Railways Passenger Travel Insurance Scheme:

  • The nomineewill get 10 lakhs in case of death or total disability
  • The applicant will get 7.5 lakhs in case of partial disability
  • The nomineewill get Upto 2 lakhs for hospitalization expenses
  • The applicant will get 10,000 for transportation of mortal remains from the place of a train accident or where an untoward incident including terrorist attack, dacoit, rioting, shootout or arson, occurs

Required Eligibility and Conditions for Applying Indian Railways Passenger Travel Insurance Scheme:

  1. The scheme is applicable only for Indian Citizens who book their e-ticket through NGeT Website Application only. Citizen of foreign countries are not eligible for this scheme
  2. The scheme is optional, however if the option is exercised it will be compulsory for all passengers booked under one PNR number
  3. The premium is Re. 92 paise per passenger inclusive of all taxes
  4. Customer shall receive the policy information through SMS and on their registered email IDs directly from Insurance Companies along with the link for filling nomination details. However, Policy number can be viewed from Ticket booked history at IRCTC Page
  5. After the booking of ticket, the nomination details to be filled at respective Insurance Company site. If nomination details is not filled then the settlement shall be made with legal heirs, if the claim arises
  6. The coverage for the policy shall be for each passenger under the PNR in case of Death, Permanent Total Disability, Permanent Partial Disability, Hospitalization Expenses for Injury and Transportation of mortal remains following Rail Accident or untoward incident
  7. The optional travel insurance will not be provided for the children below 5 years of age
  8. In case of passenger opting for insurance, the claim/liability shall be between insured and the Insurance Company
  9. In case of short termination of trains due to any reason, if the passenger opts for the alternate mode of transportation arranged by railway upto the destination station, then this part of the journey of the passenger shall also be covered under the policy taken by the passenger.
  10. In case of diversion of train due to any reason, the coverage shall be for the diverted route.
  11. In case of vikalp train, the policy obtained by the passenger for covering this journey in the original train shall be valid in the vikalp train also
  12. Once the premium is paid by the passengers no cancellations is allowed. Accordingly, no refund of premium will be made in all cases including waitlisted ticket
  13. The coverage for Hospitalization Expenses for Injury is over and above the death/permanent total disability/partial disability
  14. The Travel Insurance Scheme shall be kept uniform for all classes

Document Required for Applying Indian Railways Passenger Travel Insurance Scheme:

  1. In case of Death Claim:
  • Report of the Railway Authority confirming the accident of the train or untoward incident
  • Report of the Railway Authority carrying the details of the passengers declared dead.
  • Duly Completed Personal Accident Claim Form signed by Nominee / Legal Heir along with the NEFT mandate details & cancelled cheque
  • Photo identity proof of nominee
  • For Death Claims, claim will be settled only to nominee declared at the time of buying insurance through IRCTC portal
  • In absence of nominee, claim will be paid to Legal Heir only – as per Legal Heir / Succession Certificate
  1. In case of Disablement Claim:
  • Report of the Railway Authority confirming the accident of the train or untoward incident
  • Report of attending doctor confirming the extent of disability
  • Medical bills corresponding to doctor’s prescription
  • Duly Completed Personal Accident Claim Form signed by insured / Nominee
  • Attested copy of disability certificate from Civil Surgeon of that Hospital in which the treatment has undergone stating percentage of disability
  • Attested copy of FIR
  • All X-Ray / Investigation reports and films supporting to disablement
  • Claim form with NEFT details & cancelled cheque of the beneficiary
  • Photograph before & after disability
  1. In case of Hospitalization Expenses for Injury:
  • Report of the Railway Authority confirming the accident of the train or untoward incident
  • Discharge summary
  • Original Hospital Bills and medical bills corresponding to doctor’s prescription Page 12 of 14
  • Advance and final receipts (All receipts shall be numbered, signed and stamped)
  • Prescriptions for medicines
  • Diagnostic Test Reports, X Ray, Scan, ECG and others including doctor’s advice demanding such tests)
  • Cash memos/bills for medicines purchased from outside

Application Procedure: 

  1. There is no such application procedure and the person can apply for this scheme at the time of booking of tickets
  2. After the booking of ticket, the nomination details to be filled at respective Insurance Company site
  3. Customer shall receive the policy information through SMS and on their registered email IDs directly from Insurance Companies along with the link for filling nomination details
