To create a corruption free mechanism of food distribution through Fair Price Shops

On January 16, 2021, the Punjab government kick started a new initiative in the benefit of the poor people across the state. CMO Punjab, Captain Amarinder Singh virtually launched the allotment of 7,219 Fair Price Shops (FPS). This initiative tends to ensure timely distribution of food items through fair price shops directly to the beneficiaries thereby eliminating unnecessary hoarding and the middlemen. The fair price shops will now include more consumer items thus it will boost the in-hand income of the shop owners. It will create a corruption free mechanism of food distribution to the ration card holders in the state. This allotment of shops is under the government’s ‘Ghar Ghar Rozgar te Karobar Mission’.

  • The main objective of the scheme is to ensure timely and uninterrupted distribution of food grains and other necessary consumer items
  • It tends to avoid corruption in the food distribution mechanism
  • It would end the exploitation of the ration card holders/ beneficiaries by the middlemen or through frequent hoarding
  • Fair Price Shops will use smart cards will be issued with the biometrics of the card holder which will be easy and safe to use.
  • It will enable the beneficiaries to visit any fair price shop across the state to get the regular items

  • CM also praised the ration card shops/ depots in the state for their persistent service during the lock-down thereby ensuring supply of food grains and essentials to the general public. About 17 lakh food kits were distributed to the poor during those times.
