National Overseas Scholarship for Students with Disabilities

The National Overseas Scholarship for Students with Disabilities is started by central government (ministry of social justice and empowerment) for physically handicapped students. The scheme provides financial assistance to the students with disabilities who are finally selected for pursuing Master’s level courses and Ph.D. abroad in the following specified fields of study Engineering & Management, Pure Sciences & Applied Sciences, Agricultural Science & Medicine, Commerce, Accounting & Finance and, Humanities, Social Science & Fine Arts

Benefits of National Overseas Scholarship for Students with Disabilities:

  • Disabled students get financial assistance as a benefit under this scheme for various countries like
  • For the United States of America and other countries: Annual maintenance allowance of US$ 15,400/-(US Dollars Fifteen Thousand four hundred) has been prescribed for all levels of courses covered under the scheme
  • The prescribed contingency allowance for books/essential apparatus/study tour/travel cost for attending subject related conferences, workshops etc./ typing and binding of thesis etc. is US$ 1500/-( US Dollars One thousand five hundred only) per annum
  • Only for the United Kingdom: The annual maintenance allowance of GBP 9,900/-(Great Britain Pound Nine Thousand nine hundred) has been prescribed
  • The prescribed contingency allowance for books/essential apparatus/study tour/travel cost for attending subject related conferences, workshops etc./ typing and binding of thesis etc. is GBP 1100/-( Great Britain Pound One thousand one hundred only ) per annum
  • Incidental Journey Allowance: The prescribed Incidental journey allowance is the US $ 20/-(twenty only) or its equivalent in Indian rupees
  • The prescribed equipment allowance is Rs.1500/-(Rupees one thousand five hundred only)
  • Poll Tax: Actual will be paid, wherever is applicable
  • Visa Fees: Actual visa fees will be paid in Indian rupees
  • Tuition Fees: Tuition fees as per actual will be admissible
  • Local travel, students medical insurance premium will be paid by government
  • Passage grant is also provided under this scheme

Required Eligibility for applying National Overseas Scholarship for Students with Disabilities:

  1. Engineering & Management, Pure Sciences & Applied Sciences, Agricultural Science & Medicine, Commerce, Accounting & Finance and, Humanities, Social Science & Fine Arts only students of these courses are eligible for scholarship
  2. Total income from all sources of the employed candidate or parents shall not exceed Rs.6,00,000/-( Indian rupees six lakh only) per
  3. Student should be below 35(Thirty-Five) years, as on the first day of the month of the advertisement of the scheme
  4. For Ph.D.: First class or 55 %( fifty-five percent) marks or equivalent grade in relevant Master’s Degree. Preference would be given to the experienced candidates
  5. For Masters’ Degree:55 %( fifty-five percent) marks or equivalent grade in relevant Bachelor’s Degree. Preference would be given to the experienced candidates
  6. Not more than two disabled children of the same parents will be eligible
  7. The finally selected candidates are required to obtain admission and join only an accredited university/ institution abroad within three years from the date of communication of selection

Application procedure of National Overseas Scholarship for Students with Disabilities and document required:   

  1. Income certificate below 6 lakh
  2. Aadhar card
  3. Previous academic pass mark sheet
  4. A copy of latest tax-assessment, as well as latest monthly salary slip from the employer, is also required to be enclosed with the application
  5. Self-certification will be required from the candidate that not more than two children of parents
  6. Candidates who are in employment must forward their applications through their employer along with a ‘No Objection Certificate’ (NOC)
  7. A certificate that shows person is disabled or handicapped
  8. Residence proof e.g. voter ID
  9. Passport
  10. PAN card
  11. Passport size photos
  12. Bank details e.g. account number, IFSC code, MICR code
  13. Marriage certificate(in case of married)
  14. Birth certificate
  15. Copies of offer of admission by the university/prospectus etc

Selection procedure:

  1. The Scheme will be advertised in the newspapers giving summarized information about the Scheme
  2. The candidates shall after assessing their eligibility and suitability, as per conditions of the scheme, apply to department of disability affairs (employed candidates through proper channel)
  3. The candidates shortlisted by the screening committee will be required to present themselves for personal interview before the selection committee
  4. As per the merit list candidate will be shortlisted

Duration of Scholarship:

The prescribed financial assistance is provided up to completion of the course/research or the following period, whichever is earlier

  1. Ph.D. — 04 years (Four years)
  2. Masters Degree — 03 years (Three years)
