Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Sadak Yojana launched by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (Government of India). The scheme is basically an initiative to make the roads safer by eliminating the dangerous spots on highways. Under the Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Sadak Yojana, the central government eliminates dangerous road sites where accidents occur more frequently by using the better design and road engineering. The government also set up railings on hill roads running along deep gorges. The ministry of transport & highways has sought details from the states about the dangerous roads and sites to set up the railings and prepare reflectors. The government will take the help of the Indian Institutes of Technology to prepare special reflectors for hill roads and redesign them to fix sharp curves. India has the highest number of road fatalities in the world. According to the World Health Organization, More than 231,000 people killed in the road accident in the country every year. The government has aims reduce this number by the year 2020. The central government of India has release initial fund of Rs 2,000 crore to make the road safer under this scheme. The scheme is a part of the government’s national action plan aimed at halving the number of road accident deaths by 2020. The government also starts awarding star certification to car models based on safety. The government established the specialized agency, the Bharat National Car Assessment Programme to test and grade the safety of cars sold in India. The ministry is also introducing new safety norms for two-wheelers, which account for 72% of the vehicles on India’s roads and more than half of the fatalities in road accidents
