Tamil Nadu government has launched with a new health scheme thereby providing accident-cum-life insurance coverage to the Below Poverty Line (BPL) families. On February 23, 2021, Deputy Chief Minster, O. Panneerselvam announced the launch of Puratchi Thalaivi Amma Comprehensive Accident-cum-Life Insurance scheme by the government while presenting Interim Budget, 2021-22. Under this scheme insurance cove of Rs. 2 lakhs will be given in case of natural death, Rs. 2 lakhs in case of permanent incapacitation and Rs.4 lakh in case of accidental death of the beneficiaries. About 55.67 lakh BPL families will be benefited through this scheme. The state government will bear the entire insurance premium under this scheme and thereby provide the insurance cover to the beneficiaries for free.

- The main objective of the scheme is to protect and cover the poor, below poverty line residents in the state
- This scheme will provide an insurance cover of Rs. 2 lakh insurance coverage in case of natural death and permanent incapacitation and Rs. 4 lakhs in case of accidental death
- The insurance cover under this scheme is cash free/ cashless
- Any resident of the state belonging to 18-50 and 50-70 age groups can avail the benefit of the scheme
- This scheme will provide a proper life coverage to the beneficiaries
- This scheme will enable to maintain a balance of life and health of the people

- Entire burden of the premium will be borne by the state government
- Beneficiaries in the age group of 18-50 years for life cover and 18-70 years for accident group
- Renewal of policy cover can be done up to 55 years
- This scheme will benefit about 55.67 lakh beneficiaries out of which 32.51 lakh beneficiaries will be from rural areas and 23.15 lakh beneficiaries will be from urban areas
- For this scheme, State government has enlisted services of Life Insurance Corporation for life coverage and United India Insurance for accident cover
