AMRUT Yojana

The AMRUT Yojana is launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Ministry of Urban Development (MoUD). The objective behind introducing this scheme is to provide basic services water supply, sewerage, urban transport to households and build amenities in cities which will improve the quality of life for all, especially the poor and the disadvantaged is a national priority and to develop civic infrastructure in 500 cities and towns having population of one lakh and above. The mission also includes some cities situated on stems of main rivers, a few capital cities, important cities located in hilly areas, islands and tourist areas. The total outlay for AMRUT is Rs. 50,000 crore for five years from FY 2015-16 to FY 2019-20 and the mission will be operated as a centrally sponsored scheme. The purpose of Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation is to ensure that every household has access to a tap with assured supply of water and a sewerage connection, increase the amenity value of cities by developing greenery and well maintained open spaces (e.g. parks) and reduce pollution by switching to public transport or constructing facilities for non-motorized transport (e.g. walking and cycling). All these outcomes are valued by citizens, particularly women

Benefits of AMRUT Yojana:

  • Will be reduction in pollution by switching to public transport or constructing facilities for non-motorized transport e.g. walking and cycling
  • Better environment is the key thing like increase the amenity value of cities by developing greenery and well maintained open spaces e.g. parks
  • Construction & improvement of drains and stormwater drains
  • Construction of sidewalks, foot over bridges, no motorized transport, buses, BRTS, multilevel parking, waterways and ferry vessels

Objectives of AMRUT Yojana:

  1. Water supply to each household
  2. New, augmentation and rehabilitation of water supply system
  3. Special arrangements of water for difficult areas, hills and coastal cities
  4. Rejuvenation of water bodies for water supply and recharge of groundwater
  5. Sewerage
  6. New, augmentation and rehabilitation of sewerage systems and treatment plants
  7. Recycling water for beneficial purposes and
  8. Reuse of wastewater
  9. Development of green spaces and parks with special provision for child-friendly components. For parks, ULBs will have to establish a system for maintenance with local resident participation
  10. Construction & improvement of drains and stormwater drains
  11. Construction sidewalks, foot over bridges, no motorized transport, buses, BRTS, multilevel parking, waterways and ferry vessels

Implementation of AMRUT Yojana:

  1. Mission is implemented at three level National level, State level, and City level
  2. 50000 crore rupees will be spent on the mission over next five years. Central assistance will be to the extent of 50% of project cost for cities and towns with a population of up to 10 lakh and one-third of the project cost for those with a population of above 10 lakh
