The Urban Development Department, Assam has formulated a new scheme named “The Assam Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation and Street Vending) scheme 2020” on July 13 last. The main objective of the scheme is to regulate the increasing no. of street vendors in Guwahati. This scheme is to come into force with immediate effect.

- For operational guidelines of support to Urban Street Vendors, a state level Project Sanctioning Committee is constituted
- The committee is constituted under the Chairmanship of the Principal Secretary/ Secretary in charge of Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana – National Urban Livelihoods Mission (DAY- NULM).
- A State Nodal Officer has been appointed for ensuring proper implementation of the Act, Rules and Scheme for street vendors
- Commissioner in the case of GMC and the Executive officer of the Urban Local Body (ULB) are to be the nodal officers
- GMC survey in 2015 showed the no. of street vendors in the city as 7,183. However as of today, the no. has raised to more than 40,000 vendors in Guwahati, as per the claims of the Assam Street Vendors’ Association (ASVA).
- Thus, a mechanism to regulate the vendors is of core importance. It will help the vendors to function smoothly and for a long run.
