The Free Education scheme is started by Tamilnadu government (Department of Backward Classes and Most Backward Classes and Minority Affairs) for the students who belong to backward classes, most backward classes and denotified communities (BC/MBC/DNC) to pursue higher education. The objective of the free education scheme is to provide better opportunities for increasing their rate of attainment in higher education and enhance their employability and empowerment through education and upliftment of the socio-economic conditions of backward classes, most backward classes, and denotified communities
Benefits of Free Education Scheme:
- Free education scheme provides free education to candidates who belong to backward classes, most backward classes, and denotified communities
- The approximate amount totally sanctioned to the students under free education schemes for various courses are indicated below for the general guidance of the students
- B.A: Rs. 1200
- B.B.A., B.Com: Rs. 1450
- B.Sc: Rs. 1490
- MBBS: Rs. 6400
- Indian Medicine: Rs. 2900
- BE / B.Tech: Rs. 10000
- BVSc: Rs. 5000
- B.Sc(Agri):Rs. 3600
- Polytechnique / Diploma: Rs. 5000
- Pharm: Rs. 4250
- B.Sc (Nursing): Rs.2700
- The students staying in hostels attached to the institutions are eligible for sanction of boarding & lodging charges at the following rates
- For BC
- Arts Science, Law Degree Courses: For Chennai Rs.75/- per month and for district Rs.60/- per month
- Professional Degree Courses: For Chennai Rs.75/- per month and for district Rs.60/- per month
- Industrial and Technical Courses: For Chennai Rs.75/- per month and for district Rs.60/- per month
- For MBC/DNC
- Professional Degree Courses: Rs.140/- per month
- Polytechnic and Diploma: Rs.90/- per month
- Science(UG/PG) Degree Courses: Rs.90/- per month
- +2 and Under Graduate Courses (Arts): Rs.80/-per month
Required eligibility and conditions for applying Free Education Scheme:
For BC / MBC/DNC:
- The candidate must be the first graduate in the family
- Parental income of candidate should not be more than Rs. 50,000 per annum
- Candidate must belong to backward classes, most backward classes and denotified communities (BC/MBC/DNC)

- Only undergraduate candidates are eligible
- Following mentioned courses are eligible for availing benefits of free education scheme
- 3 Year Arts/Science Degree courses (B.A., B.Sc., B.Com, etc.,)
- 3 Year Polytechnic Diploma Courses
- Professional Degree courses (Medical, Engineering, Agriculture, Veterinary, Law, Indian Medicine etc.)
For MBC/DNC:
- No conditions in so far as the 3-year degree courses only (Via BA, B.Sc., B.Com etc), 3-year polytechnic diploma course and professional degree courses like medical, agricultural, veterinary, law, Indian medicine etc., conditions applicable to BC also applicable to MBC/DNC
Document required for applying Free Education Scheme:
- Filled scholarship application form
- Caste certificate
- Caste validity (for particular students who pursuing engineering or other degrees )
- Income certificate stating income up to Rs. 50,000 per annum
- Aadhar card
- Residence proof e.g. certificate form residence authority
- Identity proof e.g. college/school identity card, election card
- Ration card
- Certificate that stating candidate belongs to minority community or minority declaration certificate (required if candidate belongs to minority community)
- Bonafide certificate
- Non-creamy layer certificate
Scholarship Application Form:
- Scholarship application forms are centrally printed and supplied to the educational institutions by the District Backward Classes and Minorities Welfare Officers in the districts. The eligible BC/MBC/DNC students can therefore easily obtain the scholarship forms free of cost and resubmit the filled in application forms directly to the heads of educational institution
