Ration Card is an essential document for availing necessary basic food items at lower prices. It is issued by the concerned state government based on the income/economic status. There are 3 categories considered while issuing ration cards, Above Poverty Line (APL), Below Poverty Line (BPL) and Antyodya Anna Yojana (AAY). It can be applied by any resident irrespective of caste.
Need of Ration Card:
Ration Card is required as an identity proof, for availing reservation for SC and ST categories, for getting necessary food items at lower prices, etc.
Types of Ration cards in Maharashtra:
- Yellow Card – For families which fall Below Poverty Line (BPL)
- White Card – For families having annual income of Rs. 1 lakh or more
- Saffron Card – For families above Rs. 15,000 but less than one lakh annually.
Important documents required while applying for a Ration card:
Proof of Identity: Any 1 of the following documents
- PAN Card

- Driving License
- Identity Card issued by Govt. organisation
Proof of Address: Any 1 of the following documents

Age Proof: Any 1 of the following documents (in case of Minor)

- If received salary, provide Form no. 16
- Retirement/Salary holders Bank Certificate
How to Apply for Ration Card:
One can apply for Ration Card in Maharashtra either Online or Offline:
For Applying Online:
- The applicant is required to visit the official portal of Department of Food, Civil supplies and Consumer Protection @ mahafood.gov.in
- Scroll down to Online services and select option to Apply online, for new Ration card.
- Fill in the details in the form correctly like, Name, mobile no., District, Taluka applicable.
- Verify the mobile no. via OTP
- Then, enter the details like total Family members, total income, occupation, address details, LPG connection details, etc and upload a passport size photo.
- Upload necessary document proofs
- Ensure the filled in details, check if the application is complete and Click on submit.
- After proper verification of the documents by the concerned authority, the ration card will be issued as per the economic status of the applicant.
For Applying Offline:
- Visit the nearest Rationing Officer/Circle Officer/ Food Distribution Officer/Assistant Controller of Rationing
- Get the application form (Hard copy) and fill it with the required details and then submit with all the necessary documents.
- Details to be entered in the form are like name, family member details, DOB, gender, monthly income, profession, etc.
- Applicant can also take a printout of the application form from the site, manually fill it, sign the declaration, paste photograph and submit it in the office with all the necessary documents.
- Also affix the court fee stamp of Rs. 2/- as the processing fee.
- After thorough verification and investigation of documents submitted by the concerned authorities, the Ration card will be issued.
In case of any changes in the ration card or loss of ration card, one can login to the mentioned portal of Department of Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Protection, and make the necessary changes or application accordingly.
Processing Time: A period of 15-30 days is required for processing a Ration Card in Maharashtra.
