What is driving license?
The driving license is the official document which authorizes its holder to operate various types of motor vehicle on highways and some other roads to which the public have access. In various Indian states, they are administered by the Regional Transport Authorities/Offices (RTA/RTO). A driving license is required in India by any person driving a vehicle on any highway or other road defined in the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. Types of driving license:
- The state of Maharashtra offers driving license for a number of vehicle types, as given below
Transport Vehicles
- Light Motor Vehicle – This category includes taxis, auto rickshaws, delivery vans, jeeps etc.
- Medium Goods Vehicle – This category includes vehicles such as tempos, delivery trucks which are used for the transport of goods
- Medium Passenger Vehicle – This category includes vehicles like minivans, tempos for passengers, larger commercial vehicles
- Heavy Goods Vehicle – This category includes vehicles such as trucks and large vans, meant to transport goods
- Heavy Passenger Motor Vehicle – This category includes vehicles such as buses used for commercial passenger transport
- Road Roller
Non-Transport Vehicles:
- Motorcycle without Gear – This includes vehicles such as scooters, mopeds
- Motorcycle with Gear – This category includes all gear motorcycles
- Light Motor Vehicle – This category includes small private cars (sedans, hatchbacks etc.)
Document required for applying For Learner’s license, Permanent license & Renewal of license:
- Address proof e.g. electricity bill
- Age proof e.g. birth certificate, voter card
- Living certificate
- Medical certificate form 1-A
- 3 Passport size photographs
- 8th pass certificate in case of transport license

Required eligibility for application:
- Individuals should be above 16 years of age to apply for a two-wheeler (moped)driving license and above 18 years of age to apply for a vehicle driving license
- Applicants who wish to apply for a transport vehicle driving license have to be above 20 years of age.
- Applicants must have a Learner’s license before applying for a permanent driving license
- The permanent Driving license has to be applied for after 30 days and within 180 days of the Learner’s license being issued
Online application procedure:
- Applicant should visit official website mentioned next for filling online application form https://sarathi.nic.in:8443/nrportal/sarathi/HomePage.jsp
- Select the “Driving license” tab on the homepage, whereupon the form for a new driving license will be displayed
- First, fill online application form with relevant information
- You can choose to download other forms onto your computer and fill in the information requested (such as vehicle details, personal details etc.) at the moment or fill it up at a later time
- Once you have filled in all the relevant details, upload the documents required and submit the form. You will have to carry the originals when you visit the RTO for your driving test
- Once you have submitted your application form and received a notification regarding your eligibility to take the test, you can book an appointment for the same online
- This enables you to choose a test date and time that is convenient for you, and also ensures your test takes place on the selected date. The procedure for booking an appointment is given below
- Visit sarathi.nic.in and select the “Appointment for slot booking” option on the homepage.
- Select the “DL Slot booking” option from the drop-down menus at the top of the page and select the “Slot Booking for Online Applications” option
- Fill in the details on the page that opens, such as the online application number
- You will be then able to select a date and time slot for your driving test
- You will receive an acknowledgement, an application number and you will receive a notification once your application has been processed
- Once the appointment slot has been fixed, you will have to be present at the RTO with your original documents as mentioned in your application form
- If you pass the test successfully, you will be issued with a Driving License, which will be sent by post to the address mentioned in the application form
Fees:
- For Learner’s license: Not more than Rs. 70
- For Permanent license: Not more than Rs. 1000
