Union Government of India launched Swachh Swasth Sarvatra initiative to strengthen health centers in open defecation-free (ODF) blocks. This Swachh Swasth Sarvatra initiative taken in association with Ministry of Drinking Water & Sanitation and the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare. The objective of this initiative is to strengthen community health centers in 708 open defecation-free blocks across the country to enable them to achieve higher levels of cleanliness and hygiene. Under this initiative, 10 lakh rupees as a financial assistance will be given to the community health centers so that they can be strengthened to meet the standards of sanitation, hygiene and infection control. The initiative is a part of the “Swachh Bharat Mission” and it is focused on the twin objectives of constructing toilets and enabling behavioral change. The government has set a target to make India Open Defecation free by 2nd October 2019. Along with this, Union Health Minister J P Nadda and Union HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar also jointly launched a booklet- Healthy Children Healthy India. The booklet contains tips on leading a healthy life for children.

Features of Swatch Swath Sarvatra:
- The Swachh Swasth Sarvatra is a part of the Union Government’s flagship Swachh Bharat Mission and is focused on the twin objectives of constructing toilets and enabling behavioral change
- It is joint initiative of Ministry of Health and Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation to achieve better health outcomes through improved sanitation and increase awareness on healthy lifestyles
- Its objective is to build on and leverage achievements of two complementary programmes – Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) and Kayakalp
- Under it, financial assistance of 10 lakh rupees will be given to the community health centers so that they can be strengthened to meet the standards of sanitation, hygiene and infection control
Objectives of Swachh Swasth Sarvatra:
- Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation has declared over 700 blocks as Open Defecation Free (ODF). Community Health Centres (CHCs) in ODF blocks of the country will be allocated Rs 10 lakhs under National Health Mission (NHM) to focus on sanitation and hygiene
- Under Kayakalp, one Primary Health Centre (PHCs) in each district is awarded for meeting quality standards including sanitation and hygiene. Under SBM, the Gram Panchayat in which the PHC which gets awarded under Kayakalp for that district will be noted, and special focus will be given to make it ODF at the earliest
