The Finance Minister of Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma presented Assam Budget for the financial year 2019-20. Many social welfare schemes, subsidies, scholarships & freebies were announced in the budget. Subsidized rice at Rs 1/Kg, free 1 tola/gram gold for poor brides are the prominent initiatives out of all the other announcements.
Assam budget 2019-20:
- Affordable Nutrition & Nourishment Assistance (ANNA) Yojana: To provide rice at the subsidized rate of Rs. 1 per Kg
- ANNA scheme will benefits 53 lakh poor households in the state & will provide food security to the people
- The scheme to be implemented starting from March 2019
- Free One Tola Gold Scheme: Poor brides will be given 1 gram gold worth of Rs. 38,000 at the time of their wedding
- Brides from all those families with annual income less than Rs. 5 lakh are eligible
- Free Text-Books Scheme: Assam government to provide free text-books to all the students from class 11th till degree levels
- Subsidy of Rs. 700 for 10 month on their mess bills for students staying in government college or provincialised colleges & university hostels
- Free e-bikes: Government to provide battery operated e-bikes free of cost
- The free e-bikes are applicable only to the girl students securing 1st division & above in higher secondary examinations
- Free Rice & Sugar: Assam government will also provide free rice & 2 Kg of sugar every month at free of cost to the tea garden workers
- Immediate Family Assistance Scheme: Widows upto age of 45 years to get immediate assistance of Rs. 25,000 along with monthly pension of Rs. 250 till 60 years of age
- Scheme for Muslim Community: Development Corporation for the Indigenous Muslims to be established
- A budget of Rs. 200 crores for scholarships for girls from minorities for higher education
