Govt to reward developmental coaches of medal-winning athletes under Khelo India program

The Sports Minister of India Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore announced that the government has started to reward developmental and grassroots level coaches of the award winning athletes Under its Khelo India program.

The coaches and trainers in India at the grassroots level are not rewarded at all when their athletes win. To motivate them and to empower athletes and coaches in the initial days they need to be rewarded. Under the Khelo India program government will reward such coaches with cash prices when their athletes won at Olympics, Asian Games and Commonwealth Games.

Govt. wants to hire and reward good coaches.

During his address the Sports Minister said that the government want schools to hire good coaches and encourage them. The government will be using technology to create database of such coaches. It will be open sources and can be seen by anyone. Government is also want greater involvement of women athlete and the Minister announced that 2018 will the year of sports and also want to promote indigenous and rural sports.

Khelo India Scheme: govt to provide 5 lakh sponsorship to 1000 athletes

Government of India has announced Khelo India Initiative to identify and encourage athletes and provide them opportunities to prove their talent. Government is hosting Khelo India National Games a 6 days event between 31st January till 8th February. The event will be broadcasted on the National Sports channel and Star India. 1000 athletes will be selected from the competition and will be given annual sponsorship of Rs. 5 lakh each for eight years.

The Khelo India games will be hosted in following 5 stadiums in the national capital:

  1. Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium
  2. Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium
  3. Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Swimming Pool Complex
  4. Dr. Karni Singh Shooting Ranges Complex and
  5. Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium

Games/disciplines for Khelo India program 2018:

  • Archery
  • Athletics
  • Badminton
  • Basketball
  • Boxing
  • Football
  • Gymnastics
  • Hockey
  • Judo
  • Kabaddi
  • Kho-kho
  • Shooting
  • Volleyball
  • Weightlifting and
  • Wrestling

Total of 667 medals , including 197 gold medals for grab during the event.

Government is also looking to improve sports infrastructure in the country and looking for public-private partnership for the same. Government is thinking on privatizing stadiums in India and working and sustainable policy for the same.
