To provide a platform and benefit the apple farmers in J&K

On October 21, 2020, the Cabinet approved the extension of Market Intervention Scheme (MIS) in the union territory of Jammu & Kashmir for the current 2020-2021 season. This scheme decision was passed in the union cabinet meeting chaired by Hon. Prime Minister, Mr. Narendra Modi. Market Intervention Scheme (MIS) is related to apple procurement in Jammu & Kashmir. Under this scheme, about 12 lakh tonne apples will be procured in this season and the payment will be made to the apple farmers through DBT into their bank accounts. Central government has allotted a budget of Rs. 2500 crore for implementation and operation. This scheme will generate employment opportunities as well as support the apple farmers in Jammu & Kashmir.

Scheme Objectives and Benefits:

  • The main objective of this scheme is to provide a transparent platform to the apple farmers to sell the apples grown

Scheme Details:

  • Market Intervention Scheme is a central government initiative for the procurement of apples from the apple farmers in Jammu & Kashmir.
  • It is extended now for the season 2020-2021
  • The procurement of apples was also done in the year 2019-2020 and the same is extended to this year as well
  • This procurement is done by central procuring agency, National Agriculture Cooperative Marketing Federation (NAFED)
  • Procurement will be done through J&K controlled Directorate of Planning & Marketing Corporation, Department of Horticulture and J&K Horticulture Processing and marketing Corporation (JKHPMC)
  • Under this scheme, the National Agriculture Cooperative Marketing Federation (NAFED) will procure about 12 lakh tonne apples in Jammu & Kashmir in this season
  • Farmers will get the payment through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) into their bank accounts
  • Price committee is set up for fixing the prices of apples a per the varieties and grades
  • In case on any losses, the Central and Jammu & Kashmir government both will bear the same on 50:50 basis.
  • A budget of Rs. 2500 crore is allotted to NAFED for overall operation of this scheme
  • This scheme tends to generate employment opportunities as well as benefit the apple farmers through increased income
