Mid-Day Meal Scheme is a flagship program of the Government of India which is implemented in association with the Gujarat State Government, Gujarat is the second state in the country to start Mid-Day Meal scheme in 1984. In this scheme, the share of central government is of 75% and the share of State government is of 25%. The main objective of the scheme is to encourage poor children belonging to disadvantaged sections, to attend school more regularly & help them concentrate on classroom activities, thereby increasing the enrollment, retention & attendance rates. The Mid-Day Meal Scheme is viewed as an opportunity to inculcate hygiene and sanitation practices among children. The scheme involves the provision of hot cooked meal free of cost to school-children on all working days. It aims at increasing enrollment rate, reducing the dropout rate and reducing the burden of poverty on poor parents and caste discrimination in the society. Under the scheme primary class (1 to 5) and age group of students 6 to 10 years and upper primary class (6 to 8) and age group of students 11 to 13 years of Government and Government Aided schools are served nutritious and delicious food in the school.
