On August 13, 2021, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the ambitious National Automobile Scrappage Policy which aims to ensure elimination of vehicles which are unfit and polluting from the roads across the country. This initiative was earlier announced by Finance Minister- Nirmala Sitharaman in the budget 2021-22. This policy introduces fitness tests for all the private as well as commercial vehicles. It includes voluntary scrappage of private vehicles older than 20 years and commercial vehicles older than 15 years based on a fitness test. This is a voluntary policy for the Indian vehicle owners. Various incentives like tax benefits, waiving off the registration fees, etc., will also be provided for scrapping the vehicles. It will not only bring in new investments but also create new job opportunities.
