On June 10, 2021 the Assam government launched the Sishu Sewa Scheme for the children who lost their parents due to covid. This scheme is in line with the existing central government scheme. Marking the launch of this scheme, Chief Minister Hemant Biswa Sarma distributed fixed deposit certificate and laptop to 11 beneficiaries in the state who lost their parents due to covid. This scheme was initially announced by the chief minister on May 29, 2021. Under this scheme, government would do a fixed deposit of Rs. 7.81 lakhs for each child who lost his/ her parents due to covid. Monthly interest on the fixed deposit will be given to the child as financial assistance of Rs. 3,500 per month and the principal amount of 7.81 lakhs will be credited to the bank account of the child once he attains 24 years of age. Children below 10 years of age with no guardian or care taker will be provided shelter at state government’s child care institutions. Implementation of the scheme will be taken care of by the Assam State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (ASCPCR).

Objectives and Benefits:
- The main objective of the scheme is to provide assistance to the children who lost their parents due to covid
- Under the scheme, fixed deposit of Rs. 7.81 lakhs for each child who lost his/ her parents due to covid.

- Upbringing and education of such children will be taken care of by the government.
- Minor girls will be admitted to Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya.
- In case of girl who lost her parents and is of marriageable age the government will provide 1 tola of gold under Arundhati scheme and one time assistance of Rs. 50,000 for her marriage.

- CM also announced a one-time grant of Rs. 2,50,000 for the women who lost their husbands due to covid
- These widows will also get assistance of Rs. 830 per month under Orunodoi scheme along with Rs. 300 per month as widow pension
- This scheme is a crucial step by the government to help the children in these tough and unprecedented times thereby ensuring their welfare and social security
