The Government of Karnataka has announced the Free College Education Scheme to provide free college education to the girls studying in the state. The state government will bare the cost of the college education of the girls studying in pre-university, graduation and post-graduate courses in government colleges. The primary objective of the scheme is to empower girls in the state & provide them equal opportunities.
Mostly girls drop out of the school after the school education due to various reason. The primary reason is the financial conditions of the families does not support higher education. The free college education scheme will help girls pursue higher education. It will also reduce the drop out rate of girls students.

The scheme will benefit 3.7 lakh girls and will cost Rs. 95 crores yearly. The scheme will be applicable from the academic year 2018-19. The state cabinet approved the scheme in December 2018. The Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister of Karnataka Krishna Byregowda made an announcement. Girls usually dropout after school education. The Right to Education Act supports girls till the school education.
