The Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund Fellowship is started by Indian Government (Ministry of Human Resource and Development for students. The Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund in 1968 introduced Jawaharlal Nehru Fellowships dedicated to the encouragement, support, and patronage of higher learning. The fellowship is not confined to any particular stream of studies and is awarded for research in the field of the natural sciences as well as in the humanities. The fellowship is tenable for two years and carries a monthly stipend of Rs.1, 00,000 which is exempted from the recipient’s income tax. The Fellowships are open to scholars in every discipline – the sciences as well as the humanities – and also two categories of people not normally covered by existing schemes such as writers, journalists, artists and civil servants. - Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund Fellowship provides benefits in the form of a stipend for encouragement, support, and patronage of higher learning. Rates of Fellowship are mentioned below
- Under this scheme, the candidate gets a monthly stipend of Rs. 1,00,000, which is exempt from Income Tax u/s 10(17A) of the Income Tax Act, 1961
- The selected candidate will get financial assistance for some other expenses also like e.g. actual expenses on secretarial assistance, traveling and other contingencies are met by the Fund subject to a ceiling of Rs. 75,000 per annum

- The only criterion is that candidates should possess proven capacity for outstanding work and a real desire to pursue a creative project, exploring new possibilities in their chosen field
- Candidate must be a permanent resident of India
- The Fellowships are open to scholars in every discipline the sciences as well as the humanities
- The Fellowships are open to categories of people not normally covered by existing schemes such as writers, journalists, artists and civil servants for undertaking not only projects of highly sophisticated and technical subjects but also for study in depth of current problems relevant to the India of today
- Fellows have complete freedom to work at places of their choice within India
- Selection will be done by Selection Committee consisting of distinguished persons in different fields of human Endeavor
