The Chhattisgarh Government has launched an innovative scheme for digital empowerment of the people in the state called┬аSanchar Kranti Yojana (SKY). Under the scheme students will be given free smartphones. The objective of the scheme is to increase digital literacy and encourage them to use digital mediums as much as possible. The scheme is an ambitious project of the Chief Minister Shree Raman Singh and was launched in August 2017. In the first phase of the scheme free smart phones will be distributed to the regular final years students in the state. The scheme will connect students with the online digital resources and reduce the divide amongst them.

Sanchar Kranti Yojana (SKY): Eligibility

  • Only the citizens of┬аChhattisgarh are eligible
  • Below Poverty Line (BPL) and Low Income Groups (LIG), families who`s yearly income is less than 2 lakh are eligible
  • People residing in the villages and remote areas too are eligible
  • School and college students along with women are eligible too
  • Girls and women between 18 – 60 years of age will be given preference

Sanchar Kranti Yojana (SKY): Implementation & How it works?

  • 1500 new mobile towers will be installed across the state, primarily in the areas where cell phone towers does not exist
  • There are two phases of┬аSanchar Kranti Yojana (SKY):
    • Phase 1: In year 2017-18 in which the governement will distribute 45 lakh free cell phones in the rural areas
    • Phase 2: In year 2018-19 during which 4.8 lakh mobile phones will be distributed to people in the urban areas

Sanchar Kranti Yojana (SKY): Free smart phones for students (Mobile Tihar)

During the first phase of the SKY scheme the final year regular students studying in the state will be given free smart phone. It will provide them with learning resources available online. It will help students connect to the world and will also provide them employment, self-employment and entrepreneurship opportunities.

Sanchar Kranti Yojana (SKY): Highlights

  • 45 lakh free smart phone will be distributed in the rural and urban areas of the state
  • Students to get laptops, tablets along with smartphones
  • The main objective is encourage people to go cashless and encourage for digital payments
  • Urban development authorities to implement the scheme in the urban areas
  • Panchayats and Department of Rural Development to implement the scheme in the rural areas
  • Small and remote villages too will be covered under the scheme
  • In the remote areas where cell phone towers are not installed, the government will give all the necessary permissions and help in the installation of the towers
  • The mobile/internet service provides will be allowed to install towers free of cost on the top of the government buildings
  • The mobile phones will be registered on the name of the female members of the family
  • The smart phones will have Goth mobile app by the government
  • The app will help people connect to the chief minister
