Support to Training and Employment Programme for Women (STEP)

The Support to training and employment programme for women scheme introduced by central government (ministry of women and child development) in 1986-87 as a ‘Central Sector Scheme. The objective of the STEP scheme is to provide skills that give employability to women and to provide competencies and skill that enable women to become self-employed/entrepreneurs. The assistance under STEP Scheme will be available in any sector for imparting skills related to employability and entrepreneurship, including  Agriculture, Horticulture, Food Processing, Handlooms, Tailoring, Stitching, Embroidery, Zari, Handicrafts, Computer & IT enabled services along with soft skills and skills for the workplace such as spoken English, Gems & Jewellery, Travel & Tourism, Hospitality. The Scheme plans to benefit women who are in the age group of 16 years and above across the country including rural women.

Benefits of Support to Training and Employment Programme:

  • Support to training and employment programme to improve the performance of women workers by enhancing the quality of work in which they are engaged
  • Woman will be prepared for getting technical job
  • Poor women who do not have the opportunity of formal skill training, such woman will able to peruse desired training
  • STEP will provide competencies and skills that enable women to become self-employed/entrepreneurs
  • This Scheme also plans to provide financial assistance to the NGOs for imparting training to the poor & needy women for their skill up-gradation. It is being funded by the government

Eligibility for enrolling into Support to Training and Employment Programme:

  1. The scheme is intended to benefit women who are in the age group of 16 years and above means, all woman across country are eligible to peruse training under STEP but she must have completed 16 years of her age

Document required for enrolling into Support to Training and Employment Programme: 

  1. Identity proof e.g. Aadhar card, Voter ID, Birth certificate
  2. Application form will available at programme running institute or NGO
