The Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi has announced Visiting Adjunct Joint Research Faculty Scheme also called as VAJRA to attract scientists of Indian origin to contribute to the India’s growth story. The scheme is launched on the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas 8th January 2017. The prime minister`s wants to create a platform for the PIO technologies and scientists so that they can work on the research and technology initiatives, spend time with the Indian counterparts and do knowledge transfer. Under the scheme foreign researchers can spend three months every year for five years in India and carry out their research. The scheme will be implemented by the Department of Science and Technology Government of India (DST). The POI scientists will be paid $15,000 for the first month and $10,000 for next two months. DST is targeting to get 1,000 visiting scientists, 500 POIs and 500 foreign scientists over next five years. The Visiting Adjunct Joint Research Faculty Scheme is open to the foreign scientists as well. Bilateral projects will be started under the scheme and collaborators will be appointed from India. The POI`s and foreign scientists can visit India and work with the collaborators. The prime minister promised to ease and process and the documentation for the visitors.

- Persons of Indian origins (PIOs) scientists, technologists and academicians
- Overseas Citizen of India (OCIs), Indian laborers taken to various countries during 19th century
- Foreign scientists, technologists and academicians interested in the research collaboration
