Weather-Based Crop Insurance Scheme for Cardamom Farmers

This scheme is started by Central government with an aim to help the cardamom farmers through crop protection against natural calamities.

On February 26, 2022 Union Minister of Commerce & Industry, Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution and Textiles, Piyush Goyal launched Weather based crop insurance scheme for cardamom farmers. This scheme aims to double the export of spices in the next five years. It aims to provide assistance to the cardamom farmers through crop protection. This scheme will help the farmers to increase their production as well as export. Climate changes like unexpected rainfall, heavy rainfall and scanty rains affect the cardamom crops to a great extent.

Crop protection insurance under this scheme will provide cover the farm crops of cardamom farmers thereby lessening the loss and impact on income of the farmers. This scheme will currently focus on Idukki district on a trial basis. It is a joint venture of Spices Board and Agricultural Insurance Company thereby to benefit the cardamom farmers.
